I illustrated this idea with a relatively
informal example from the world of golf. I know of a few people who came to the
game of golf because they had to “know
about golf to impress the boss.” None of them are still playing. Those who I
know who are still playing do so
because they have a sense of belonging within the game and its community. Out
of that they are motivated to better learn the behaviours and ideas behind the
game.
I played a segment from the movie The Legend of Bagger Vance where a caddy
(who “gets” the U shaped, non-mechanical, presence way of being) implores his
golfer to “see the field” and “feel the game with your hands; your hands are
wiser than your head will ever be” In other words “stop trying to know the game
in your head first and then belong to the game with your whole body second. It
has to be the other way around!
